Are you supposed to pay sales tax for buying stuff off ebay?
Caiterz asked:
My dad got his taxes done yesterday and one of the questions they asked him was “Did you buy anything off the internet that you need to report sales tax on?”
Personally /I/ buy things off of the internet.. Not my dad. I Do NOT sell.. Or Buy off to resell. I buy things for me.
Do they have any right to ask that?? Are they legally supposed to ask that?
Are they just trying to get more money off of my dad?

Yes, that is a question to ask. Yes, you are supposed to pay state tax on anything bought from an out of state source. I doubt many people own up to it though.
If you live in a state that has sales tax on an item you buy, and you don’t pay sales tax to the seller, in most places you are supposed to pay a “use tax” to the state on the purchase, equal to the sales tax amount. About the only items this really gets enforced on are cigarettes bought on the Internet.
Officially, you are supposed to pay a “use tax” to the state for any items that you bought without paying sales tax at the time (with certain exceptions; for example, food is exempt in most states). This is not very well enforced. In any case, it is a legitimate question.
